Physical Education - Dr. Morgan

Welcome to the MCE Physical Education Department! Watch this site for announcements regarding upcoming events, and ways in which you, as parents can become involved. I will also post a copy of my grading policies and any other pertinent information that you may need in order to have your child equipped and ready to participate in PE. I'm looking forward to working with your children! My goal is to equip them with basic motor skill competencies so they will feel comfortable playing a wide variety of individual, dual and team sport activities. Physical fitness is also a key ingredient in each of my class periods. During this time I focus on activities that will enhance cardio respiratory endurance, muscular strength and flexibility.

FITNESS EMPHASIS:
During the first 9 weeks of the semester, our aerobic fitness emphasis was on jumping rope. We will continue to do a lot of rope jumping throughout the year since this is a great way to build cardiovascular endurance. If you have jump ropes at home, please encourage your student(s) to practice jumping during their free time. This will provide additional opportunities for them to perfect their technique and increase their endurance. (On the skill evaluation forms that I am completing for each student, I have indicated if your student would benefit from having the opportunity to practice jumping rope or other fitness skills at home.)

During the 2nd 9 weeks, in addition to jumping rope from time to time, we will be gradually building up to running a half-mile. Ten times around the periphery of our gymnasium is just over 1/2 mile. On very cold days or during inclement weather, we will do our running inside, but when the weather permits we will go outside to run. Please be sure your child has a lightweight jacket or sweatshirt they can wear outdoors for PE during our cooler weather. During the 2nd 9 weeks we will also continue to build abdominal strength through bent-knee sit-ups, and upper body strength by practicing "perfect" pushups (pushups where the body is in good alignment from shoulders to toes and a deep elbow bend is employed).

GRADING POLICIES:
Student evaluations in Physical Education are based on performance in two areas. One portion of the evaluation (Skill Performance) focuses on whether a student is performing below, at, or above his or her developmental level in the skills which are presented during that particular grading period. All students should be able to achieve a proficiency that is at or above their developmental level. If your child is performing below developmental level, you may schedule a conference with Dr. Morgan to obtain more specific information.

The other half of the evaluation focuses on the attitude or behavior and degree of participation (effort) of the student while in class. This part of the evaluation is based on your child's ability to obey established rules, show respect for the teacher, and interact in a positive manner with other children in the class. Your child's willingness to give a good effort regardless of the task, to participate without complaining or making derogatory remarks, and to work independently practicing the skills that have been presented by the teacher is also a part of this evaluation. The Behavior/Effort portion of the evaluation is graded using the standards of N (needs improvement), S (satisfactory), or E (excellent) for grades K-2, and A, B, C, D, F for grades 3-8.

The PE skill evaluation forms are organized into three developmental levels. Developmental Level I encompasses grades K through 2; Developmental Level II, grades 3 and 4; and Developmental Level III, grades 5 through 8. If you have any questions or concerns regarding you child's performance in PE, please contact me.

PE ATTIRE:
Students need to wear rubber-soled athletic shoes that tie securely on PE days. Girls should wear shorts, slacks, or skorts on those days or wear shorts under their jumpers. Students that are not dressed appropriately for full participation will lose points on the behavior/effort portion of their grade. For older students who wish to wear a different shirt during PE, the following option is available. They may wear a MCE PE shirt from previous years or they may purchase a plain grey Fruit of the Loom t-shirt from Wal-Mart for $3.00. Samples of these shirts are in the office. No other variations of shirts are acceptable. Students who plan to change for PE, must do so before their PE class time begins. Otherwise they will be marked tardy and this will result in a loss of points on their behavior/effort portion of the grade.

WATER BOTTLES:
Students are strongly encouraged to bring a water bottle (filled only with water) to PE class that is marked on the cap with their student number. This allows them to get a drink quickly without losing valuable class time. Under normal circumstances, students will not be allowed to leave the gym to get a drink during PE class. They should either bring a water bottle to class, or drink prior to or after PE.
